E4S Alliance Expands Grid Digitalization Ecosystem
Today, Helen Electricity Network Ltd. (Helen) joining the Edge for Smart Secondary Substations (E4S) Alliance, created to develop a standard, flexible, manageable and interoperable platform for next-generation Smart Grids. Having some of the largest distribution system operators in the world partnering with technology providers to co-develop an entirely new solution will revolutionize the energy transition and help achieve a climate-neutral economy. The E4S Alliance is helping digitize the grid and make it data driven in order to meet carbon neutrality.   Distribution System Operators (DSOs) will benefit from an open standard based secure and highly scalable platform to monitor, protect and control the electrical grid. Virtualization of applications, in combination with edge computing leads to lower total cost of ownership, faster time to market for new applications and more efficient management and delivery of electricity.

About Helen Electricity Network Ltd. (Helen)
We serve 430,000 customers in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. In terms of customer numbers, we are Finland’s third-largest company focusing on electricity distribution. Our security of supply is outstanding as no less than 96% of our electricity network runs underground, safe from the whims of the weather. On average, a Helsinki resident has a power cut lasting 30 minutes only every ten years. We play our part in taking care of the city and its appearance. Our substations are designed with due consideration for the environment, and some of our transformer substations and distribution cabinets have been landscaped through various art projects. Our operations are driven by a strong will to be a good neighbor to all Helsinki residents! We are part of the Helen Group, which is owned by the City of Helsinki.

About Barbara
Barbara is the Edge AI platform for Digital Grid. Since its foundation in 2016, Barbara has been developing a cybersecure by design Edge Infrastructure compliant with industry standards such as IEC-62443-4-2 security level 1.With the exponential development of hardware processing power and the commoditization of Machine Learning models, the Edge has emerged as a great alternative to the Cloud for deploying AI in critical processes. Barbara manages to reconcile the best of both worlds, extending the Cloud experience to the Edge with a flexible, robust, and easy-to-use platform, helping industrial organisations deploy and maintain AI across their distributed assets, with the privacy, security, autonomy, and real-time latency that the cloud cannot provide.Barbara´s technology stack incorporates all widespread industrial protocols southbound, freely runs any dockerised process or micro-service concurrently on the same device and includes all connectivity options northbound.
